Resumo

In the present work the effect of surface finish of two AISI 304L stainless steel on the corrosion potential (E_corr) in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution was investigated and its value compared with the type of anodic potentiodynamic curve obtained for pitting potential (E_p) determination in this solution, as well as the E_p value. Five different surface finishes were examined, namely: grade 600 silicon carbide paper grinding, immersion in water for 88 hours, exposure to air for 88 hours, pickling in sulfuric acid, and passivation in nitric acid. It was found that E_corr and its standard deviation are strongly affected by the type of surface finish. Moreover, there are evidences of a linear correlation between E_corr and E_p, as well as between the percentage of anodic curves with a well defined pitting potential (type N curves) and the uncertainty in the determination of E_corr.
