The CSN plant is located in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, approximately 140 kilometres inland from Rio. The No.3 Blast Furnace was originally designed by Nippon Steel in the mid 1970s, with subsequent rebuilds by NKK in 1986 and Hoogovens in 1996. The aim of the 2002 rebuild was to enhance the design of the furnace significantly so as to give a projected campaign life of 20 years, with the capacity of the furnace also being increased to achieve higher production levels. CSN No.3 Blast Furnace was rebuilt in an outage which commenced in May 2001 and was completed 98 days later, a record for a large furnace rebuild in Brazil. The companies undertaking the rebuild were a consortium led by VAI’s Blast Furnace Division from the UK together with Voest-Alpine Indústria do Brasil Ltda and a Brazilian engineering and construction company “Setal Engenharia Construções E”. At all times during the project, the consortium worked in close partnership with the engineering staff of CSN.
