Adequate control of the gas flow in the blast furnace is of primary importance for obtaining minimum coke consumption and furnace productivity. Furthermore, in the case of modern big furnaces this control is even more important because of the need to protect the furnace wall and cooling system. The gas flow pattern in the furnace is controlled by the charging sequence and in this respect the Paul Wurth bell-less top gives maximum flexibility. However, such a control requires adequate equipment for the measurement of the gas flow pattern in the furnace. The GECEM-DPS system is such equipment, giving the temperature pattern at the stockline directly over the total surface area of the furnace top. It consists of an infrared camera installed on the blast furnace top and linked to a PC-based data processing system in the blast furnace control room. Real-time and historical temperature distribution and profile displays give the operator a useful supervision system for: obtaining optimal gas flow distribution detecting gas flow instabilities, scaffolding, formation of chimneys, hanging and slip tendencies.
