Acid iron ore pellets of about 5 wt.% silica rich gangue are investigated under conditions relevant to the iron blast furnace. The alkalis are introduced in three different ways : as part of the gangue phase, as fine crystals of alkali carbonates near the pellets surface, and as alkali metal vapour mixed with the reducing gases. During reduction, the silica-rich gangue phase plays na important role in Dearing with the destructive stresses suffered by the iron oxide. When available during reduction the, alkali oxides flux the silica and react with some of the ferrous oxide to form low melting point primary slag, which weaken the pellets and cause them to degradate long before metallization. The mechanisms and certain measures to control the behavior of the pellets during reduction are discussed.
