Aiming to reduce environmental impacts, this work evaluated the effect of natural fiber reinforcement and PP-g-MA compatibilizer content on the properties of Recycled Polypropylene (PPr) biocomposites with 10% sisal fiber. Samples of Virgin Polypropylene (PPv), PPr, and composites with and without compatibilizer (0%, 2.5%, and 5% of PP-g-MA) were obtained by extrusion and injection molding, and characterized by Izod impact, Shore D hardness, and heat deflection temperature (HDT) tests. PPv showed superior impact absorption capacity due to its structural integrity. However, PPr and the composites exhibited increases in hardness and HDT compared to PPv, associated with the physical anchoring caused by residual impurities in the recycled polymer and the mechanical barrier of the fibers, whose thermal stability prevented their degradation. The compatibilizer revealed a paradoxical behavior: 5% of PP-g-MA maximized impact strength through improved interfacial adhesion but reduced the HDT. The formulations with 0% and 2.5% outperformed the 5% formulation in thermomechanical stability, as the excess of low molecular weight additive saturated the interface, acting as a local plasticizer. It is concluded that the PPr/sisal system aligns with the circular economy, requiring a fine-tuning of the compatibilizer content to balance toughness, hardness, and thermal resistance.
