The basic function of an ingot mould assembly consisting of mould/base plate/feeder head is to produce good quality ingots of predetermined weight and geometric shape for subsequent processing by rolling or forging. For each ingot application, it is important that ingot shape, feeder head shape and materials used should be carefully specified to produce the maximum product yield without loss of product quality. The shapes of ingot mould and base plate need to be specified with equal care as they directly affect the quality and economics of the ingot end product, this design requiring definition according to the chosen mould material and foundry operational procedures. Such a total design concept will provide the best technical and economic results in ingot casting.
