Coal injection to B.F., after a slow start in 1960 is gaining acceptance in practically every steel plant using blast furnace iron-making route. Since the oil price escalation in the late 1970's many steel plants stopped oil and gas injection and went back to all coke regime. But soon the need for the injectant to control temperature in tuyere zone and progress in pneumatic and injection system technology led them to consider coal injection into blast furnace. Compared with oil and natural gas, coal needs significantly less compensation for flame temperature depression and hence for limited possibilities usually available, is a more practical injectant. Blast furnace coal injection main advantage basically is due to financial benefit obtained by replacing coke with less expensive coal. However net productivity increase has been evident in all steel plants using coal injection so far. As reported for every 10 kg/thm coal injected, in conjunction with flame temperature compensation, 0.8% increase in productivity is expected. Apparent productivity increase actually observed can be three times more (Ref. no. 7)
