Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has emerged as an attractive process for producing large-scale metallic components, using gas metal arc welding (GMAW) as the energy source. This study evaluated the residual stress distribution and microstructure of 316L austenitic stainless steel preforms fabricated by WAAM. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD), using the cosα method, at three regions along the build height: top, middle, and base. Microstructural characterization was performed by optical microscopy (OM) after electrolytic etching. Compressive residual stresses were observed throughout the preform, with values of -641 ± 69 MPa at the top, -562 ± 51 MPa in the middle, and -201 ± 20 MPa at the base. These results indicate higher compressive stress magnitudes in the upper and middle regions, whereas the base exhibited lower residual compression, suggesting thermal relaxation and stress redistribution during successive deposition cycles. OM revealed a predominantly austenitic matrix with the presence of delta ferrite (δ-ferrite), exhibiting vermicular and skeletal morphologies. Overall, the results demonstrate that the WAAM thermal history simultaneously influences the residual stress state and microstructural evolution of 316L stainless steel.
