Resumo

Kaolin is a white clay mineral constituted mainly by kaolinite. Due to its small particle size and brightness, kaolin is used thoroughly not just in ceramic industry, as well as in paper, inks, pigments, polymeric and pharmaceutical industries, among other uses. For getting a good commercial value and looking for new markets, kaolins must be free from contaminants such as quartz, feldspars and muscovites that can cause color and particle size damages. Besides this, iron and titanium contaminants can cause colour changes. This work presents a study of chemical and particle size characterization of kaolins from the central region of Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. Kaolins denominated “dark pink”, “light pink” and “white” were studied. Each sample was classified in different size particle fractions and the chemical composition of each fraction was determined, as well as iron contaminant levels were evaluated. In this characterization study, X-ray Fluorescence and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP-AES) techniques were used. Then, some preliminary preparation tests were made to evaluate each kaolin behavior in relation to iron contaminants levels and brightness parameters.
