Most products manufactured in steel mills undergo some form of cutting prior to shipping to make the products more useful for End User customers. Flat rolled products are typically side trimmed during production and often slit to narrower widths to meet customer requirements. Long products such as plates, round bars, and structural shapes are sheared during the rolling operation at elevated temperatures and often cold sheared to finishedlengths. Alternately, these products and tubulars may be cut-tslength by various sawing techniques. Changes in manufacturing technologies as well as End-User quality demands have resulted in significant changes in the way rolled products are cut-to-length. Operating practices and the quality of tooling used in these operations has a profound effect on the economics and resulting end quality of the product.
