Resumo

In this investigation, the influence of heat treatment on the abrasion resistance of white cast irons has been studied. A pin abrasion test was used to simulate high stress two-body abrasive wear. The tested alloys with 9, 15, 21, 27 wt.% Cr were conducted on silicon carbide, corundum and flint abrasive papers. The type of abrasive used had an essential effect in ranking these alloys for resistance to high stress abrasion. The beneficial effect of retained austenite in enhancing the abrasion resistance was discussed. The best wear resistance was obtained in as-hardened microstructure containing a large amount of retained austenite. In some alloys, secondary hardening was observed at 500 °C tempering after cooling from the austenitizing temperature, thereby improving both their abrasion resistance and toughness. The wear resistance has been greatly affected by the changes occurring in microstructures of tested alloys during the tempering process.
