This paper describes how the optimisation of rolling conditions (roll lubrication, strip skin cooling) on the 2050 mm Hot Strip Mill at Iscor Vanderbijlpark allows the full potential of High Speed Steel (HSS) rolls to be realized. Based on development work and laboratory studies on oxidation behavior, improvements benefit both HiCr and HSS rolls proportionally, reducing rolled-in scale and increasing campaign lengths. The full implementation of HSS in stands F1 to F4 during 2000 also increased mill availability by eliminating intermediate roll changes and reduced workload in the roll shop.
