Carburizing is a thermochemical process widely used to increase the wear resistance of steels without compromising core toughness. In DIN 16MnCrS5 steel, the effects of different carburizing cycles remain insufficiently explored, representing a relevant gap in the literature. This study systematically investigated the influence of time, temperature, and cooling rate on the mechanical and microstructural properties of the material. Four treatment cycles were evaluated: the current industrial process and three variations, including adjustments in carbon diffusion and modifications in the pearlitization stage. Characterization included Rockwell and Vickers hardness tests, microhardness measurements to determine the depth of the hardened region, optical and scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction for retained austenite quantification and grain size evaluation. The results demonstrated that adjustments in diffusion time and carbon concentration significantly reduced retained austenite and increased the uniformity of the hardened layer. Modifications in the cycle parameters allowed a reduction in treatment time without compromising surface hardness, although they influenced the depth of the hardened region. It is concluded that rigorous control of carburizing parameters is essential for microstructural predictability and optimization of the performance of DIN 16MnCrS5 steel, demonstrating a relevant contribution to scientific advancement in this field.
