SAE 4340 steel is widely used because it possesses an excellent combination of mechanical properties. This study evaluates the influence of heat treatments and cryogenic on the hardness and fracture surface of SAE 4340 steel. The stell was austenitized at 850 °C for 1 h, followed by cooling in air, water, or oil, and subsequent tempering. Cryogenic treatments consisted of exposure at −80 °C for 48 h and immersion in liquid nitrogen for 24 h. Rockwell C hardness tests, tensile tests, and scanning electron microscopy analyses were performed. The results showed that the greatest hardness reduction occurred after cryogenic treatment applied following tempering. Fractographic analysis revealed distinct fracture modes, ranging from ductile fracture characterized by extensive microvoid coalescence and dimple formation to brittle fracture containing cleavage facets and intergranular cracking. An intermediate fracture behavior was also observed, exhibiting both dimples and cleavage facets, typical of quasi-cleavage fracture. It is concluded that cryogenic treatments significantly alter the fracture mechanisms of SAE 4340 steel, promoting changes in the fractured surface. However, the gains in hardness were limited, indicating that the main contribution of these treatments to this steel is associated with microstructural stability and the modification of fracture mechanisms.
