Resumo

This paper presents operational and quality-related results based on 2.5 years of production at the first ISP (Inline Strip Production) plant by Arvedi in Cremona, Italy. The mini steel mill, designed for the efficient production of high-quality hot strip from carbon and stainless steels, began operations in January 1992 and reached full production by March 1993, just 15 months after commissioning. The plant was initially designed for a 500,000 t/year capacity, though early limitations were imposed by European Community regulations. The ISP concept integrates thin slab casting and rolling into a compact layout, achieving consistent production of hot strips with thicknesses ranging from 1.7–12 mm for carbon steel and 2.0–12 mm for stainless steel, up to 1,300 mm wide. The process has demonstrated stable and uniform strip production, and trial runs with austenitic stainless steels have also been successful. The data collected is vital for process optimization and quality improvement across various steel grades and strip dimensions.
