This work addresses the additive manufacturing of aluminum alloys, specifically the AlSi10Mg alloy, by selective laser melting (SLM), one of the additive manufacturing techniques in powder bed. The hierarchical microstructure of AlSi10Mg in the as‑built condition is described as the main source of its high strength. The effects of post‑processing heat treatments (stress relieving, direct aging at 245 °C, and T6) are analyzed, highlighting the trade‑off between strength and ductility. Advances in composites with ceramic particles (SiC, TiO₂, ZrO₂) and functional particles (NdFeB) are reviewed. The fabrication of architected microcellular structures is discussed, revealing microstructural heterogeneity around pores and their homogenization via T6 treatment. Finally, strategies based on eutectic alloys are presented as routes to overcome hot cracking and achieve better high‑temperature performance.
