Resumo

Carbon composite pellets were smelted to produce pig iron heated by microwave in N₂ gas. Pig iron was produced at a low temperature of approximately 1350°C in 20 minutes. The carbon content was 2 mass%, near the liquidus line of the Fe-C system. The impurities analyzed by XRF indicate very low concentration levels of silicon, phosphorus and sulfur compared to pig iron produced using a conventional electric furnace. The cross section of reacted pellets was observed by EPMA. Possible reaction mechanism will be discussed.
