Resumo
A high alloy content and new manufacturing methods have led to the development of High Nitrogen Steels (HNS) with nitrogen contents ranging from 0.3 to 3%. Nitrogen in solid solution is utilized to improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steels, while stable nitride precipitates enhance the hot strength of hot work tool steels and creep-resistant steels. Several new HNS grades are already in commercial use, and others are under testing in various applications. This includes both martensitic and austenitic high nitrogen surface cases on stainless steels.
