Today steel producers have to overcome the constantly increasing market demands on productivity, product quality, flexibility and costs. Especially in the field of LD(BOF) steelmaking a high pressure is put on cost-effective and efficient plant operation. Competitive steel production can only be achieved by utilization of information and automation technology. During the last decades these technologies have passed through enormous developments, which enables today the application of totally new process control solutions in the steelmaking area. Despite the actual high standard of LD steel production there is still a significant optimization potential with regard to further dynamisation of the LD converter process. VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau (VAI) has developed a completely new solution for dynamic process control in converter steelmaking—DYNACON. This system is based on the continuous analysis of the off-gas, taking actual process characteristics, as metallic charge and blown oxygen into account. Significant investment and operational cost savings in addition to outstanding plant performance can be achieved with DYNACON. This paper describes the VAI dynamic modeling approach to ensure LD steel plant operation at peak performance.
