Resumo
Metal biomedical materials should usually be resistant to corrosion when they are inside a body and should also own good mechanical properties. This paper focuses on cobalt- chromium alloys used in fastened and removable dental prosthesis production, discussing its microstructural variation and corrosion resistance after being melted in open flame (oxyacetilene torch). Microstructures revealed through electrolytic attack were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and microanalyses, displaying dendrite structures with precipitate formation in interdendrite regions, these precipitates being enriched in Cr and Mo in the interdendrite regions like quantified by EDS. Electrochemical study carried out through potentiodynamic polarization curves measures and open circuit potential analysis has shown a behavior similar to chromium, displaying a wide passivity region due to a chromium oxide layer formation.
