Resumo

The present project has the aim to study the improvement of the mechanical properties of superficial characteristics in a Ti6Al4V alloy, induced by ion nitriding process. The increase of its hardness and the improvement of the Ti6Al4V alloy allow to enlarge its applicability in several industrial areas, in particular, in biocompatibility applications. The process is being studied using a nitrogen plasma jet reactor. This reactor of low plasma intensity works on the expansion of a gas through a constriction hole that separates a camera source and a vacuum camera where the process is induced. A d.c. electric discharge is obtained in a cathode located in the camera source. The wall of the camera acts as anode. The plasma reagent of nitrogen emerges of the hollow cathode and expands itself in the vacuum camera, where the sample is placed. The samples are physical and chemical characterized in order to formulate correlations according superficial characteristics of the material in function of the parameters of the ion nitriding process.
