In the continuous casting process, a breakout is a major problem which results in lost production and damaged equipment. The current estimate for each breakout is 100,000 to 200,000 U.S. dollars. Thus, any effort taken to prevent the occurrence of breakouts is time well spent. There are several potential causes of breakouts including: Start Cast Loss of Taper Bleeding Stickers Corner Penetration The first three items cause only a small percentage of all breakouts. The last two account for the majority. For start cast and loss of taper breakouts, operational changes can reduce their frequency. The frustrating aspect of sticker and corner breakouts is their seemingly random nature. They can be caused by operator actions such as rapid speed changes and large mold level variations, or they can occur when everything appears normal from the operator's perspective. Moreover, they can happen on various steel grades. The infrequent occurrence of sticker breakouts makes it hard to gather enough data to recognize a common cause and adjust operations. It has been found that during sticking activity in the mold, a distinct temperature pattern usually arises. To take advantage of this characteristic pattern, thermocouple-based Mold Sticker Detection Systems have been developed to help operators avoid such breakouts. This paper describes the Mold Sticker Detection System developed by Mannesmann Demag.
