This technical article presents advances in the use of cemented carbides in hot rolling with the development of CIC Rolls (Cast-in-Carbide). CIC Rolls consist of cemented carbide rings cast within nodular cast iron, forming a single piece with robust metallurgical bonding. The objective is to combine the wear resistance of carbides with the ease of torque transmission of iron. The article details the history of carbide rolls, mechanical and thermal properties, performance on different rolling stands and the manufacturing, machining and application methods of CIC Rolls in rolling bars, rebar, tubes and pinch rollers.
