Resumo

The Cu-Al equilibrium diagram shows in the range 58–70 at.%Cu three phases, γ₁, δ and probably γ₀, with structures based on that of the γ-brass. For the Cu-13 wt.%Al alloy, when quenched from temperatures in the range of 790 to 850 °C, a square-shaped phase together with the martensitic structure was observed. In order to delimitate the temperature and composition range where this square-shaped phase is observed, Cu-Al alloys with compositions of 11 to 15 wt.%Al were prepared. This phase was characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated two regions, monocrystalline grains in a polycrystalline matrix. The EDX analysis showed no appreciable Al-concentration difference inside and outside the squares. The square-shaped structure was observed for Cu-Al alloys with 13.1 to 15 wt.%Al in the temperature range between 790 and 850 °C which is quite close to that provisionally proposed for the β + γ₀ region.
