Resumo

Thermal separation is an important and yet often misunderstood phenomenon in understanding the classification and mechanism of polymer quenchants. In some cases it has even been stated that aqueous polymer solutions that do not exhibit thermal separation at temperatures below 100°C/212°F exhibit the same quenching performance properties as oil which also does not exhibit thermal separation in this region. One objective of this paper is to demonstrate the role of polymer thermal separation performance on quenching properties. Thermal separation of some classes of polymer quenchants is a useful procedure for reclamation of salt contaminated aqueous solutions. Salt contamination can arise from the build-up of hard metal ions from hard water or from molten salt drag-out from salt pot furnaces. A second objective of this paper is to describe the thermal separation and polymer fractionation process of aqueous polymer solutions. There have been a number of papers published which describe the drag-out properties of various types of polymer quenchants during use. However, the data that has been published to date is misleading. The third and final objective of this paper is to critique previously published data related to polymer drag-out during the quenching process and to put these explanations on a proper basis.
