The Global Steel Wire rod mill, formerly called Nueva Montaña Quijano, in Santander, Spain, was originally installed in 1961 to roll a 60 mm x 9 m long billet giving a coil weight of 230 kg. The maximum mill finishing speed was 25 m/s. The mill has been progressively modernized over a 35 year period to roll a 180 mm x 10 m long billet producing a coil weight of 2,400 kg and giving a current maximum mill speed of 85 m/s. The modifications were made in six phases: phase 1 in 1964; phase 2 in 1973; phase 3 in 1978; phase 4 in 1987/8; phase 5 in 1990/3; phase 6 in 1996. The benefits of modernization are: increased production; increase in mill finishing speed; increase in coil weight; increase in product size range; improvement in production quality; minimum downtime; mill start-up performance after phase 6 modernization. The modernization of a 35 year old rod mill shows that it is possible, with very careful expansion planning, to keep a mill competitive in the world markets and that modifications can be achieved without excessive downtime. It should be mentioned that at the present time, yet another phase of modernization is being planned for the mill.
