Resumo

The iron ore mining, minerals processing, transport and export infrastructure sectors are facing increasingly difficult challenges in the near future, such as ensuring reliability of supply (due to complex flow paths, bottlenecks, finer ores, below-watertable mining, high-clay ore properties) and sustainable development and operation (e.g. environmental emissions, social/cultural impacts, economics). This paper describes some of the new modelling, testing and design technologies that have been researched, developed and employed to meet market demands from pit to port. For example: validated computer simulation modelling via calibrated material models to improve design and operation of handling and processing operations; dealing with fine, wet and sticky ore and complex conveyor transfer/chute designs; and minimising dust emissions by addressing dustability and dust generation mechanisms. Industrial case studies are included to demonstrate key issues addressed in this paper and also some solutions to various industrial problems.
