The first stages of the evolution of the mean crystal size in polycrystalline ice samples are studied. Samples are obtained through a solid-solid phase transformation. Pure polycrystals (impurity concentrations less than 0.04 ppm) and doped polycrystals with 0.08 ppm NaCl are used. The temporal evolution of the mean crystal size is determined by means of the plastic replica method. The results show that the general recovery and primary recrystallization stages happen before 48 hours of -12°C isothermic annealing. Likewise, the doped samples reach the secondary recrystallization stage before the pure ones. This result is in agree with the observations made in grain growth, where low concentrations of soluble impurities are capable of increasing grain growth velocity in up to more than an order of magnitude.
