Resumo

The cost of electrodes represents a significant portion or the total cost of making steel in electric are furnaces. Oxidation can account for as much as 50% of total electrode consumption. Glass ceramic coatings have been developed to reó.JC:e the reac:tion of carbon from the electrodes wi th the oxygen in the steel making environment. Coated electrodes radiate less energy, and remain at original diameters longer. Results have demonstrated that energy savings can be realized by the proper application of these coatlngs. Optium results are achieved when the electrodes are coated each heat of steel, but substantial savings can be achieved by coating less frequently. Applicatlon can be from the furnace plat form; mechanically near the furnace whan the roof is opened for scrap charging; or off furnace in the electrode assentlly/storage area . Furnace operating conditions and material consumption should be studied and tabulated before and during an evaluation. Short term studies can have many variables which can yield unreliable data.
