Resumo

Roasting is an essential pyrotechnique employed for treating most of the ores and minerals for easy extraction of the contained metal values by subsequent operations. Depending on the composition and nature of the ores and concentrates, various roasting processes like oxidation, reduction, chloridisation, alkalisation, sulphation, sulphatization, and segregation are adopted to open up those and extract the metals. In this paper, the principles of each type of roasting process have been discussed briefly with examples of their commercial applications. Current trends in the research and development work in roasting processes have been outlined. During the last few years, the author and his coworkers have carried out a good number of investigations on roasting processes. These include the reduction roasting of lateritic nickel ore, sulphation roasting of complex sulphides of Cu, Pb and Zn, sulphidisation of ilmenite with hydrogen sulphide, high-temperature sodium chloride roasting of vanadium ore, low-temperature ammonium chloride roasting of the complex sulphides of Ni, Cu and Fe, alkali roasting of chromite, segregation roasting of copper converter slag and calcined complex sulphides, and low-temperature roasting of chalcopyrite with calcium chloride. While highlighting the research findings in these studies, the commercial applications of some of these have been examined. Some suggestions have been made for applying roasting processes in treating lean and complex ores and also recovering metal values from the wastes.
