SIRO-Indur, a mathematical process model of iron ore induration developed by CSIRO Minerals, has been used to evaluate the effect of goethite on a fictional straight-grate induration furnace processing hematite pellets. Changes in goethite content and dehydration kinetics were evaluated, as was the inclusion of a dehydration zone. Increases in the amount of goethite increased the fuel requirement for induration and high goethite levels of 20% or more suggested that spalling could be a problem. Lowering the dehydration temperature of the goethite resulted in it dehydrating during down-draft drying, lowering the pellet temperatures in that zone and reducing the risk of spalling. The inclusion of a dehydration zone in the induration furnace improved furnace performance provided additional primary cooling air was supplied.
