Hydrometallurgical recycling of permanent NdFeB magnets is strategic to ensure the sustainable supply of rare earth elements. To mitigate excessive reagent consumption, calcination can be employed as an oxidative thermal pretreatment stage. Through calcination, the iron predominantly present in the sample is converted into (Fe2O3), which has a slow dissolution rate, while maintaining neodymium as soluble oxides such as (Nd2O3) and bypassing the formation of the refractory (NdFeO3) phase. In this work, the selective separation between Nd and Fe was investigated using a 23 full factorial design with triplicate at the center point (11 runs). The effects of the variables (i) calcination temperature, (ii) leaching temperature, and (iii) HCl concentration were simultaneously evaluated. Pareto charts revealed that Fe extraction is negatively controlled by the calcination temperature, reflecting the passivation of hematite, whereas leaching temperature and HCl concentration act positively, increasing the contaminant dissolution up to 70.71% under severe conditions. For Nd, the leaching temperature is the dominant positive factor. Thus, the results confirmed the success of the qualitative screening analysis of the system, allowing the evaluation of the effects of independent variables on the response-variables and guiding the future transition to a Central Composite Design (CCD).
