Studies on the dissolution of copper from a Chilean chalcopyrite concentrate and Cu, Pb, and Zn from a Brazilian complex sulphide concentrate in aqueous slurry with chlorine gas have been made. The effect of flow rate and partial pressure of chlorine, particle size of the concentrates, pulp density of the slurry and the leaching temperature, has been investigated. In case of chalcopyrite concentrate, the kinetics of the extraction of the metal value have been obtained and the possible mechanism of the reaction involved has been suggested. A comparison of the extent of extraction of copper from the chalcopyrite concentrate with that from the complex sulphides during slurry chlorination has been made. The experimental conditions for the selective extraction of the metal values in the complex sulphides have been examined. Based on the laboratory scale results, suggestions have been made to undertake further studies to establish the technoeconomic viability of the slurry chlorination process for extracting the metal values from the sulphides.
