The system perspective, that means the isolated view of surface quality data at coil level as applied in the past has dramatically shifted to a new process focused and integrated scheme. Parsytec as the leading supplier of automated surface inspection systems (ASIS) is ready to deliver these added value services to its customers. This paper discusses the potential use, implementation, value and process changes resulting from the investment in ASIS in the steel industry. First typical applications in the following areas are illustrated: Hot Strip Mill operations, Maintenance management, Process technology, and Education and Training Results of case studies and pilot projects are presented, putting emphasis on the fact that the respective approaches must be driven by joint efforts to change the way people think about ASIS, and to bring them more in-line with the value based concepts of surface inspection, a new framework called Enterprise Value Management (EVM). Professional project management is clearly a key success factor.
