Resumo

Crowing quality demands prompted ARBED to develop and implement a process for in-ladle desulphurizing of steel that would easily fit into its existing ladle treatment equipment. The ALT process uses a special cellular feed device for adding powdery materials to a gas stream. The technique thus developed permits reliable desulphurization rates of 90% with final sulphur contents below 0.003%. The effects of in-ladle desulphurization on the inclusion property and the mechanical characteristics have been studied: considerable decrease of the quantity of sulphurous inclusions and globularisation of the remaining inclusions; vanishing of silicates and replacing of alumina trails by complex Ca-based globular inclusions; distinct improvement of cross ductility (elongation and flexibility); improvement of longitudinal and especially transverse resilience; considerable improvement of constriction.
