Resumo

Effects of residual stresses on the mechanical behavior of materials today often are not taken into account because there is still some lack of knowledge on the change of residual stress states as well as on the possibilities of fast measurements and control of residual stress states during the manufacturing process and the service loading of components. So the engineering design of components mainly is done without existing residual stresses and the fear of unfortunately high residual stresses always is present. In reality, however, every manufacturing process will affect and change residual stress states. According to this, residual stress effects are considered only in the case of failures or with additional surface treatment operations, e.g., shot peening, if higher power or higher torque should be transmitted. Consequently, the presentation will overview the present state of residual stress effects. Summarizing own work and results of the literature, information on possible residual stress states according to heat treatment and machining processes are given. The effects of residual stresses on characteristic static and dynamic properties of materials and components then will be presented.
