Composite materials have evolved from ancient applications to advanced engineering systems, with natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites emerging as sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials. These fibers offer advantages such as renewability, low density, and biodegradability; however, their hydrophilic nature and the presence of surface impurities hinder adhesion to hydrophobic polymer matrices, thereby reducing composite performance. This review examines chemical and physical surface treatments developed to improve fiber–matrix compatibility and interfacial adhesion. Among the chemical methods, silanization, and acetylation effectively remove amorphous components, increase surface roughness, and introduce reactive groups that enhance the bonding between fibers and matrices. Physical techniques such as plasma treatment and steam explosion modify the fiber surface without damaging its structure or generating chemical waste, providing more environmentally sustainable solutions. The results highlight that the effectiveness of natural fiber reinforcement depends directly on interfacial optimization, which governs stress transfer and the overall performance of the material.
