Resumo

A tipped tuyere can occur when least expected and often when the blast furnace is vulnerable, for example during a start-up. The damage to the equipment and the subsequent production loss can be dramatic. Frequently, several tuyeres will tip over a short period of time compounding the initial problem. Insight into the tipping tuyere phenomena is therefore desirable for every blast furnace operator. The implementation of high rates of fuel injection, greater quantities of blast oxygen and the associated production increases have raised tuyere tipping frequency compared to the recent past. The causes of tipping tuyeres are described in this paper. Countermeasures successfully applied in commercial practice at the Rouge Steel ‘C’ Blast Furnace are presented.
