Resumo

The present work describes the way vegetable fibers modify the drying behavior of refractory castables and compare their performance with the synthetic fibers currently employed for this application. Formulations of refractory castables containing vegetal and synthetic fibers were characterized using permeability measurements at room temperature and up to 600ºC and thermogravimetry. Fibers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. Thermal reactions in the fibers were associated with modifications in the permeability and drying behavior of the castables. Both types of fibers presented a suitable performance as drying and anti-spalling additive. Nevertheless, the vegetable ones showed a better performance than the polypropylene. This was associated to the structural modifications that occur in the vegetable fibers during the drying. The permeability was increased in lower temperature in this case and the pressure of the water vapor formed was reduced.
