In the stainless steel family it is above all the ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steels which have become more and more important in recent years as they combine mechanical and corrosion-chemical properties in an advantageous way. These two-phase steels are used for instance for centrifugal pumps integrated into flue gas desulphurization plants of hard-coal and lignite power stations. The profile of stress which these centrifugal pumps are exposed to is characterized by a low pH-value, a high combustible-dependent chloride content and a high solid content (limestone, gypsum). With regard to normal centrifugal pumps, particularly the duplex stainless steel type G-X 3 CrNiMoCuN 26 6 3 3 (DIN (German Standard): No. 1.4517) has proved successful. In cases of highly abrasive wear the carbide containing grade G-X 40 CrNiMo 27 5 (No. 1.4464) is used too. A systematic investigation into the wear behaviour under this type of stress has not been available until now. This paper presents results obtained from examinations of common standard materials and metallurgically modified variants concerning typical types of wear – hydroabrasion and cavitation – sustained by centrifugal pumps.
