The goal of Coal Blend Optimization (CBO) is to identify the coals and their relative proportions that produce coke that meets specification at the lowest possible cost. In general, Horizontal Heat Recovery (HHR) coke ovens have a different set of coal property constraints than Vertical By-Product Recovery (VBPR) ovens. HHR ovens are not at risk of damage from expanding coals, and thus can run a wider range of coal blends which opens the opportunity of finding a lower cost coal blend. SunCoke Energy has developed a set of CBO programs using linear and non-linear optimization algorithms that can search through coal databases and find the optimal recipe for a given set of constraints. Research conducted with these algorithms has determined the cost impact of different constraints and which constraints determine the preferred oven technology between HHR and VBPR.
