The surface velocity and steel flow pattern in a continuous cast mold, especially in the meniscus region, are important parameters that have an effect on the quality of the final product. These flow characteristics are affected by many parameters and operational variables, such as: mold width and thickness, casting speed, argon flow rate, submerged entry nozzle geometry, submerged entry nozzle depth, etc. In the present work, the effects of shape and angle of submerged entry nozzle outlet port on the steel flow in a continuous caster mold were analyzed. The pattern of steel flow inside the mold is somewhat difficult to determine experimentally. In the present work the experimental technique of nail board was used, which is able to provide information about direction and fluid velocity in the meniscus region. In the study, it was possible to identify differences in surface velocity and flow pattern for each submerged entry nozzle geometry tested, thus indicating possible changes in the process conditions to improve the flow and consequently the final quality of the products.
