Abstract

This paper presents an overview about the new emerging Smelting Reduction (SR) and Direct Reduction (DR) processes, which can be classified according to products, reducing agents and Fe-bearing raw materials. The results of the successful operation of the COREX® plant at POSCO Pohang Works, Korea are outlined, focusing on the raw materials, consumption and production figures, various metallurgical aspects as well as acquired experiences. Additionally, the status of the other COREX® plants in operation and under construction is presented. Further development activities related to the COREX® Process and the so-called FINEX Process, a new fine ore smelting reduction technology, are described.
