Abstract

An ultrasonic method for determining the degree of planarity of an inner surface, inaccessible to a mechanical instrument, with an accuracy better than 20 microns, is presented. An adapted pulse echo method is described. A comparison between the ultrasonic and the mechanical measurements, made on a specially prepared laboratory sample, yielded a very good agreement, well within the required accuracy. Some discrepancies out of this range are observed and discussed. Examples of actual measurements are given.
