Abstract
Wind power plays a central role in the global energy transition and is one of the most sustainable methods of generating electricity. It uses the kinetic energy of the wind and converts it into electric current via wind turbines. Greenhouse gases are not emitted. Wind turbines are an essential part of the transition to renewable energy, as they represent a reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly energy source. One of the central components of this technology is steel, which is irreplaceable in the towers, blades and foundations of wind turbines. High-strength steel ensures the stability and long service life of the plants, which often have to withstand extreme weather conditions. Steel is thus an indispensable material that contributes significantly to the economic feasibility of wind turbines. The required performance of the steel components is achieved by combining the steel alloy, the casting sizes and the forming technology. Regardless of whether the wind turbines are operated in onshore or offshore wind farms, steel plates with thicknesses of > 100 mm are required. The paper discusses various requirements for continuous casters for special casting thicknesses for the construction and operation of state-of-the-art wind turbines.
