Abstract

São Paulo’s State water treatment plants annual dry sludge production is about 30.000 metric tones. The majority of those sludges are disposed in rivers and other watercourses with the consequent degradation of the environment. Within the methods in study for a better disposal of the sludges is the incorporation to structural ceramic bodies. The aim of our study is verify the potential use of water treatment plant sludge as a constituent of structural ceramic bodies. It was mixed with common clay used for the fabrication of floor tiles and denominated by “Taguá”. Samples containing from 0 to 100% of dry sludge were pressed, mechanically and manually. After drying and burning between 800 and 1000 Celsius degrees the samples show, for up to 20% sludge, good ceramic properties.
