Abstract
The flash-butt welding process is widely known in the iron and steel industry. Commonly used in the entry section of a pickle line or of a fully continuous rolling mill, it currently has to cope with new metallurgical developments (dual phase, TRIP, etc.) and to meet the increasing demand of users for higher quality products (minimized weld breakage, high reliability, no need for operator). To keep pace with such developments, VAI Clecim and its clients/partners jointly developed: A new fully automatic FB 21 welder: built-in shear and flash trimmer, tool carriage unit, fast change of operational spare parts; A new approach to the process: direct current, speed control in flashing phase, position control in upset phase, reducing atmosphere, pre- and post-heating; “On-line” weld quality control process. The paper details the features of the FB 21 welder, its integration into production lines, results achieved such as weld breakage rates below 0.2%, and success in joining advanced steel grades.
