Abstract
Aqueous polymer quenchants are being used increasingly in the steel heat treatment industry as more fire-resistant, biodegradable alternatives to oil. Furthermore, it has been shown that when used in properly designed quenching systems, it is possible to achieve distortion and cracking reduction that is significantly superior to oil. However, until recently, polymer quenchants have not been used with great success for high hardenability, crack-sensitive tool steels. The objective of this paper is to discuss the details of a number of applications where a polymer quenchant has been used successfully to quench various high hardenability, crack-sensitive steels.
