Abstract

A variety of alumina-silicate refractory grogs has been prepared by firing various mixes of kaolin and bauxite obtained from Guyana, South America. This investigation has shown that mixes of a low impurity refractory grade bauxite and kaolin that has been slightly beneficiated, can produce a grog with a mullite content of up to 95%. Physical properties, such as porosity, true specific gravity, cold crushing strength and mullite content of the products revealed the degree of sintering. The mullite content of the grogs produced from blends of kaolin and bauxite compared well with rated commercial grogs produced in the United Kingdom and the United States. The advantages of a locally produced grog and technical considerations in support of the “Super-grog” concept are discussed. Factors affecting the supply of high quality raw materials that are capable of economic exploitation are also presented.
