Abstract

With the increasing demand for electrical energy and the need to improve power transmission networks, the development of materials that combine high electrical conductivity and mechanical strength has become increasingly important. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of annealing at 200 °C and the addition of 0.04 and 0.3% Ni on the macrostructure, electrical conductivity, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the Al-0.5%Si alloy. The methodology consisted of alloy casting followed by annealing heat treatment at 200 °C for 2 h on part of the samples. Subsequently, macrostructural analyses, electrical conductivity tests, and tensile tests were carried out. The results showed that Ni addition and annealing influenced grain morphology, promoting a greater predominance of equiaxed grains. Regarding electrical conductivity, annealing provided increases of 6.65%, 5.99%, and 5.81% for the Al-Si, Al-Si-0.04%Ni, and Al-Si-0.3%Ni alloys, respectively. Concerning UTS, Ni addition promoted increases of up to 18.80%, whereas annealing caused reductions of up to 24.64%. It was concluded that annealing improved the electrical conductivity of the alloys, while Ni addition enhanced their mechanical strength.
